During the week of 16-20 June 2007, ANZ National is marking Community Week, a week of activities to demonstrate our community values in action and showcase our people making a difference in our communities. The week coincides with National Volunteer Awareness Week in New Zealand, which celebrates the efforts of volunteers.
During Community Week we’ll be raising the profile of the range of initiatives that sit under the community umbrella, including Volunteering, the Staff Foundation and our financial knowledge programmes.

Volunteers contribute to our full range of services including Ambulance, Archives, Area Committees, Caring Callers, Event Services, Fellowship Groups, St John Friends of the Emergency Department, Health Shuttles, Hospitaller’s Clubs and the St John Youth Programme. We also have volunteers providing services in Administration and Support. St John in New Zealand has 13,000 members, of whom just over 7000 are volunteers. Of our approximately 3100 ambulance officers, 2300 are volunteers.
“We are always interested in hearing from new volunteers or potential volunteers, including people with no previous experience of ambulance, health or community services or of volunteering. We provide training and support,” Mr Wood says. “Our volunteers come from a wide range of backgrounds, including homemakers, accountants, farmers, orchardists, doctors, lawyers, teachers, hospitality staff, plumbers and electricians – the list is virtually endless.”
Volunteering brings many benefits on top of giving to the community and helping people. Volunteering for St John opens doors to new skills and experiences, and personal growth and development. Individuals can train in a wide variety of disciplines, increase their confidence and gain wider work experience.

GIsborne Volunteer Centre
Gisborne Volunteer Centre will have a display and drop in centre in the CBD is promote Volunteer Awareness Week. There will also be a newspaper spread and radio promotions.
IHC volunteers to be acknowledged by their Friends
The IHC volunteering team will give all volunteers a certificate from the people they volunteer (befriend) with.
There will be a small gathering in each of 30 areas throughout New Zealand, and the volunteers are being asked to bring along a friend. The People with Intellectual disabilities can then present the certificates to their volunteers. The certificates are gold in colour and our theme is Volunteers Are Like Gold.

A WELL DESERVED DAY OFF FOR NEW ZEALAND RED CROSS VOLUNTEERS
New Zealand Red Cross is celebrating Volunteer Awareness Week (15-21 June) by giving as many of our volunteers as possible a well deserved day off.
On Tuesday 17 June New Zealand Red Cross staff across the country will be stepping out from behind their desks to take on some of the roles normally filled by our valuable volunteers.
New Zealand Red Cross National Manager for Volunteers Jim Wilson says the initiative is a chance to reinforce links between staff and volunteers and to help staff understand some of the issues that volunteers face while also reinforcing the important message that we are all one team.
“Volunteer Awareness Week is an appropriate time to recognise the valuable work our volunteers do 365 days a year and acknowledge the fact that without them, the work of New Zealand Red Cross would not be possible,” says Mr Wilson.
Some of the voluntary roles New Zealand Red Cross staff will fill on Tuesday 17 June include serving breakfast as part of the Red Cross Breakfast in Schools programme, helping to deliver a hot lunch with meals on wheels, working behind the counter in Red Cross Shops and assisting with hospital transport and meet and greet services.
New Zealand Red Cross has over 26,000 volunteers registered but it always welcomes more committed people who want to make a difference.
The act of volunteering is highly regarded within the International Red Cross community with voluntary service recognised as one of the seven fundamental principles of the global organisation.

The Hon Phil Goff is hosting an afternoon in the Grand hall at Parliament Buildings for over 200 Volunteers in Wellington Prisons. This is to honour prison volunteers and thank them for the valuable contribution they make to inmates and to society in general.

Volunteering Waikato's annual Excellence Awards event will be held on Wednesday 18 June at Le Grand Boutique Hotel, and there will be 210 people attending - it is a very popular event.
There will be a display in the Hamilton Library.
Volunteering Waikato's general manager, Heather Kemp, will also take part in two radio interviews. One will focus on disability and volunteering and the second will be about volunteering in general.

Sports Minister to highlight volunteers at Tactix/Pulse netball clash
Hon Clayton Cosgrove, Minister of Sports, will show off SPARC's special Volunteer Awareness Week promotion at the Canterbury Tactix V Wellington Pulse netball game in Christchurch on Sunday afternoon 15 June. This will be one of the first events in the Awareness Week.
On display will be some of the special billboards that have been erected throughout New Zealand and the Minister will play the radio commercial being used during the week. He will also give special thanks to the team of volunteers assisting at the netball venue.

Many community groups and organizations could not function if it wasn’t for their volunteers and it’s important their work is valued and recognized.
Presbyterian Support has around 50 volunteers working from centres in Nelson and Blenheim providing a variety of positive ageing services for older people living in the community, and counseling and education services for youth children and families.
To coincide with the start of Volunteer Awareness Week the CEO of Presbyterian Support Services Upper South Island, Vaughan Milner is to visit Nelson to meet with the local volunteers.
He will speak at 1.30pm on Monday 16 June at the Presbyterian Support Nelson Centre, 360 Annesbrook Drive.

They will hold mini-expos in Spotswood College and Inglewood and New Plymouth Girls High Schools. Participating in a very visual and active way will be Red Cross, Civil Defence, local fire brigades, search and rescue services, the Department of Conservation and other agencies.
There will also be a special information display in the public hall of the Top Town Complex, where the volunteer centre is located.
They will hold mini-expos in Spotswood College and Inglewood and New Plymouth Girls High Schools. Participating in a very visual and active way will be Red Cross, Civil Defence, local fire brigades, search and rescue services, the Department of Conservation and other agencies.

Volunteer Whanganui will feature a special information and promotion stand in Wanganui's Trafalgar Square Shopping Centre for the full week in Volunteer Awareness Week. It will provide general information on volunteering as well as about volunteering opportunities now available. The Volunteeer Centre staff will be well supported by a team of volunteers in providing information and answering questions of passing shoppers.

(CA) has promoted one to one relationships between people who have an intellectual disability and committed citizens who are prepared to act voluntarily to make a positive difference in the life of a person who may be alone, face difficult challenges or be in a risky situation.

On Friday 20 June we are having a celebration at the Citizen Advocacy Auckland office for our volunteer advocates and protégés (person with an intellectual / learning disability). To date we have publicised the week to all our Registered Members and other Networks encouraging theme to plan their own events with good photo opportunities.

WeekEnd Sun (Sun Media) delivered Fridays. We have received excellent support from them every year for VAW. Advertorial, photos, stories on the Friday prior, the Friday of VAW and sometimes photos in the recent events sextion the Friday following VAW – confirmed.
Employee Volunteering: We are not a Volunteer Centre who has done a lot in this field – shortage of staff and time but I am aware that local Banks and other Business do have partnerships that they have arranged themselves.
Locally we have set up an arrangement between The Body Shop and a rehabilitation facility that will be in place April – October. From both sides this has been a great outcome and I intend approaching them for story / photo opportunity. This will be publicised by IdeasShop and locally.

Awareness Week celebration with two key working groups
Revenue Minister Peter Dunne will speak at an Awareness Week Function being jointly hosted by ComVoices and OCVS on Tuesday 17 June.
This will follow meetings that day of the Promoting Generosity Hub and the Building Better Government Engagement Group who will come together for this celebration of the week. ComVoices representatives and government officials involved in volunteering and related policy issues have been invited to join them.
Mr Dunne is expected to provide an update on the planned legislation to clarify tax law and volunteer reimbursements. A new Quick Stats on Giving will also be launched

Our service is for positive ageing. We provide a befriending and transport service to people over the age of 60 living independently in the Greater Auckland area.

Singing in Wellington Railway Station to launch Week
A Volunteering New Zealand event
The Wellington Community Choir will entertain commuters and other travellers passing through Wellington Railway Station as an Awareness Week launching event on Monday evening 16 June.
The event is being organised by Volunteering NZ in conjunction with the Office for the Community and Voluntary Sector and support from ANZ-National who will have a team of volunteers on site. Wellington MPs Charles Chauvel and Marion Hobbs will also be bringing their support to pass on the message:

I am the Co-ordinator of the Employee Volunteering Programme in the Canterbury Area.

We are running this for Volunteer Week with Civil Defence both in Timaru and Waimate.
We wanted to acknowledge the work of the emergency services, especially given the rural nature of our communities. South Canterbury has always been known for getting out there and networking and supporting each other in times of need.
Joy Sylvia from Volunteering Mid & South Canterbury and Mark Bang are organising a public meeting to inform and potentially recruit people about the work of various volunteer organisations.
The format will be a casual get together with some light refreshments available so that people can hear a short presentation , view a small table top display and get to meet some of the people from each organisation. As you can see the venue is the Timaru District Council Chambers (access from Barnard St car park).
You can see we are using "the big snow" as the theme to get peoples interest.
Timaru: Remember the BIG SNOW! Timaru Civil Defence is calling the volunteer sector All interested people are invited on Monday 16th June 6.30pm – 8pm, to celebrate Volunteer Week. There will be a Civil Defence Operations set up to view, guest speakers from CD, Search and Rescue, Mountain Safety Council, Fire Service, St John, 4WD club and Red Cross. A chance to find out all about the workings of these organisations and if you are really interested, how you might fit in.
A finger food supper and refreshments will be provided. Come along, have some fun. Everyone invited.

Welcome to Volunteering NZ Blogspot
Volunteer Awareness Week
Volunteer Awareness Week (VAW) is a great opportunity to highlight volunteering and the wide range of volunteering roles available within the community. It also encourages first-timers to give volunteering a go. This year, VAW will be held from Sunday 15 to Saturday 21 June 2008.
Some organisations may not begin their activities until later in the week, eg on Monday 16 June. However, they should still promote the week as 15-21 June to ensure a consistent message in the promotion of this most important event for volunteering in New Zealand.
VNZ will be compiling a list of activities that will be held by local volunteer centres and our members for the event. We will upload this list closer to the awareness week.
